Sukhpal Singh Bhullar
Horticulturist, lead trainer, and the hands behind Bhullar Orchards & Seed Farm in Bathinda, Punjab.

His story
From debt to a ₹12+ Lakh per acre innovation farm
Sukhpal Singh Bhullar is a 61-year-old horticulturist, commerce graduate, and lead expert at Bhullar Orchards & Seed Farm in Ghuman Kalan, near Maur Mandi, Bathinda, Punjab. His journey began in adversity when his family's transport business collapsed in 1984, leaving them with a debt of ₹9 lakh and mortgaged village land. Returning to Ghuman Kalan to start from scratch, they lived on the farm to prove themselves despite early doubts.
Guided by Punjab Agricultural University, Bhullar first grew vegetables for fast returns, cleared the debt, reclaimed their land, and bought 16 additional acres. In 1989, he planted 5 acres of Kinnow citrus, shifting the entire 36-acre farm away from wheat and paddy by 2005. A true innovator, in the late 1990s he developed a manual fruit grading machine (winning a National Award) and built a ₹7 lakh waxing plant—5x cheaper than market alternatives.
Today, Bhullar Orchards generates over ₹12 Lakh per acre in profits through smart intercropping (planting 13,000 dragon fruit plants & papayas between Kinnow rows), indoor climate-controlled saffron cultivation, freshwater pearl farming in water tanks with 12,500 mussels, spirulina, and goat farming. Honoured with 3 National and 5 State awards, he conducts hands-on training to inspire youth and prove that Punjab soil can earn more than foreign currency.
In farming, the future is not in acres—it is in ideas. The soil here can give more than dollars.

Philosophy
Precision, diversification & farmer presence
Bhullar approaches farming with a precision business mindset: 'I don't think in terms of acres anymore; I think per square metre or foot.' He combines separate drip irrigation lines, soil sensors, and carefully paired crops so every layer of land is productive without competing for resources.
When visiting scientists in the US, Bhullar asked what the best manure for citrus trees was and was told: 'Farmer's footprints!' He strongly believes constant field presence and direct marketing allow farmers to truly understand their crops and earn what they deserve.
